This first blocking pass was short and incomplete because I wanted quick feedback to see if physical humor worked for George. I also added sound effects to clarify my intention for an exaggerated gunshot.
Feedback was positive but critical: no one could tell George was firing the gun (it looked like someone else shot him) and the gun hitting his helmet wasn’t reading at all. I hit up YouTube and frame-by-framed clips of people getting hit in the face with their firearms. In addition to being incredibly entertaining, this reference exercise gave me several ideas for making the gun recoil read more clearly.
I would never show this early blocking in dailies; the playblast above is really, really basic. But it was enough to receive fast, helpful comments from a small group of peers (thanks Jacob & Tom!) and gave me a good direction for future blocking.
